PhD in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Psychosocial Aspects of Sports and Exercise

The Department of Educational Psychology and Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion, and Recreation offer a collaborative Doctoral (PhD) degree program in Psychosocial Aspects of Sports and Exercise. Students learn research design and methodology associated with the field of sport and exercise psychology and complete coursework related to applied sport psychology, health and exercise psychology, and social psychology of sport. Students gain practical experience that pertains to intervention and program development, effectiveness, and evaluation in sport, exercise, physical rehabilitation, performing arts, and military environments. Students also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience teaching at the college level. This program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in academia, or research-based, non-profit and government agencies.

Sport or exercise psychology practicum are available through the Center of Sport Psychology and Psychosocial Aspects of Sport and Exercise Lab. Opportunities for hands-on practica in evaluation, methodological/statistical consultation, and sport and exercise psychology consultation are available. In addition, the Texas Center for Performing Arts Health also offer students opportunities for research and outreach.

Degree Requirements include 63 semester hours for those entering the program with a related Master's degree (e.g., kinesiology, psychology). The actual number of hours will vary based on each student's background and advisor's recommendations. More information can be found here. In addition to the required Educational Psychology core courses, those interested in a specialization in Psychosocial Aspects of Sports and Exercise typically complete the following:

  • KINE 6125 - Advanced Sport and Exercise Psychology (3 hours)
  • KINE 6135 - Advanced Exercise and Health Psychology (3 hours)
  • KINE 6175 - Advanced Social Psychology of Sport (3 hours)
  • KINE 6185 - Advanced Applied Sport Psychology (3 hours)
  • KINE 6191 - Measurement and Assessment in Sport and Physical Activity (3 hours)
  • 6 hours of selected courses in related areas, with advisor's approval
  • Supervised Research/Practice (3 hours)
  • EPSY 6030 - Practicum, Field Experience, or Internship (3 hours)
  • Dissertation (9 hours minimum)
  • EPSY 6950 - Doctoral Dissertation (3, 6 or 9 hours per semester)
