Dr. Alexandra Thompson, who graduated from UNT in 2018 and currently is a post-doctoral sport psychology fellow at North Carolina State University, received the 2018 award for outstanding dissertation from the American Psychological Association Division 47 (Society for Exercise and Sport Psychology). In her dissertation, Dr. Thompson studied the extent to which eating disorder diagnoses changed over a six year period as collegiate athletes moved from active competition into retirement. She found that the overall prevalence of eating disorders increased over the six-year timeframe, though the change primarily happened at the subclinical level. Further, in retirement, as when they were active competitors, athletes relied on dieting and exercise as their two primary mechanisms for losing weight.
