Clinics are interactive presentations that provide in depth knowledge and experience with a wide range of key sport psychology skills and strategies (see below for specific presentations we offer). These clinics can last between 1-hour and several days, and are tailored to help you develop the mental toughness you need to perform at your best in your sport or business. In each clinic, through lecture, discussion and activities, you will be introduced to the skill, given the opportunity to practice it with the assistance of one of our sport psychology consultants and provided with materials to help you transfer and use the skill on your own outside of the clinic. Overall, the goal of the clinics is to provide you with practical, real-world strategies to improve your performances and gain the edge over your competition.

Sport Psychology Presentation Topics:

Pre-performance Routines: Setting the stage for success
In this clinic, you will learn the fundamentals of pre-performance routines and gain knowledge of how these routines can assist you in increasing their confidence, concentration, anxiety control, and consistency. You will have the opportunity to construct your own routine so you can perform at an optimal level in your sport or other performance domain.

Championship Goals: Targeting success

In this clinic, you will learn how to effectively set and achieve goals. You will have the opportunity to create your own goals for the year, season, month, big competitions, and/or everyday practice. Specific emphasis will be placed on the development of strategies for helping you achieve their goals.

Imagery: What your mind believes your body achieves
In this clinic, you will be introduced to imagery and the different ways in which it can be used to improve performance, recover from injury, learn new skills, and cope with stress. During the clinic, you will be able to develop imagery scripts for specific situations to help enhance performances.

Confidence through positive thinking

In this clinic, you will learn how to effectively control a major component of confidence - self-talk. You will be introduced to the value of positive self-talk and trained on how to incorporate it into your everyday performances and practice. In addition, you will be taught the importance of handling your own negative dialogue, which often enters your mind during critical situations.

Emotional Regulation: Finding the “Go Zone”

This clinic will teach you about the effects of physiological, cognitive and emotional arousal on performance. An emphasis is placed on helping you understand and identify your own "go zone," so you understand the emotions, thoughts and physical feelings associated with peak performance. You will learn techniques on how to get into your "go zone."

Attentional Focus: What’s important right now?

In this clinic, you will be introduced to the importance of concentration in achieving performance excellence. You will learn about a multi-factor system for conceptualizing attention and how understanding attention from this perspective can help you learn how to control your focus so you may achieve performance excellence.

Anger Management: Staying in control to reach your ultimate goal

In this clinic, you will learn what anger is and how you experience it, ultimately creating your own "anger profile." Against the backdrop of real-world, personalized situations, you will learn strategies to manage your thoughts, physical feelings, and emotions so that your behaviors are not problematic and do not end up becoming an obstacle in attaining your goals.

Stress and Coping: Avoiding burnout and establishing balance

This clinic will teach you about the process of stress - what it is, where it comes from, how it presents itself, and the possible short and long-term effects. It will provide you with useful tools on how to reduce stress and live a more balance life. In addition, it will address ways to recognize and avoid overtraining and burnout before it is too late.

Substance Abuse: Gaining the edge or going over the cliff?

In this clinic, you will be introduced to the various types of substances that are currently being abused in athletics at nearly all levels. It will teach you about the effects of such abuse as well as the resources that are available to overcome the addictive behavior that coincide with substance abuse.

Recognizing and coping with anxiety and depression

This clinic will educate you about anxiety and depression, including symptom recognition, prevention and treatment. In particular, you will have the opportunity to talk with the consultant about your current situations to gain more personal knowledge about how to cope with these often debilitating disorders.

Eating Disorders and Sport: When healthy becomes unhealthy

In this clinic, you will learn about the effects of eating disorders. Specifically, you will learn about the various types of eating disorders, early warning signs, risk factors, and possible short and long-term effects. In addition, you will gain knowledge about optimal treatment options available to people who might have an eating disorder.

Psychological Factors in Injury Recovery: Before and after the pain

In this clinic, you will learn about the psychological process of injury. You will be introduced to the psychosocial factors that influence injury occurrence as well as responses to injury, psychological and behavioral responses to injury, and different strategies for effectively coping when injured and facilitating rehabilitation. Increasing awareness of preinjury risk factors, understanding common psychological reactions to injury, and incorporating psychological strategies to influence the speed and quality of recovery will be emphasized.

Life Skills: Success in both life and sport

In this clinic, you will learn how to optimally balance sport/performance and other aspects of life (e.g., school, family). You will engaged in a variety of exercises/activities to assist you in becoming more aware of how you spend your time, what your priorities are and how those match with your time use, and how/where to ask for help when it is needed.
