Drs. Petrie and Voelker were awarded one of four grants for the NCAA’s 2016 Innovations in Research and Practice program (http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/ncaa-awards-2016-research-grants). In their study, they will examine the effectiveness of a body image enhancement program for female collegiate athletes. Based on cognitive-dissonance and mindful self-compassion, the intervention will teach female athletes how to actively appreciate themselves and their bodies, and work to minimize the effects of societal appearance pressures on their well-being. The study will be conducted across multiple athletic departments across the U.S.
